Future Shorts Film Festival drops in to Brisbane

From cinemas and concert halls to caves, cafes, libraries and warehouses, the Future Shorts Festival has been popping up in both traditional and obscure locations across 90 countries worldwide. This weekend, the Future Shorts Film Festival will travel to Brisbane for its Australia stint, bringing a program of award-winning short films from leading film festivals around the globe. Filmic endeavours from more than 20 countries are represented amongst the line-up, followed by the sounds of three local electronica musicians. The festival is showing at The Flying Cock in Fortitude Valley as part of Valley Fiesta this Saturday August 23 from 5:00 pm. Find pre-sale tickets here. more

TEDxBrisbane 2014 registrations now open

TEDxBrisbane has announced that registrations are now open to attend TEDxBrisbane 2014, and so begins the countdown to this inspiring event. In precisely 52 days from today, the wonderful Brisbane Powerhouse will once again be teeming with hundreds of people from the TEDxBrisbane community. Last year the sell-out event saw more than 500 people leave at the end of the day feeling inspired after a stellar line-up of speakers, including the finale with Li Cunxin. TEDxBrisbane creates and fosters a sense of community amongst the people and organisations who have gathered (and continue to gather) around this event, providing a cultural focus and impetus for conversation and debate. TEDxBrisbane is a full day of ideas, conversation and community and is set to take place on Sunday October 5 from 9:00 am until 9:30 pm (including an after party). The day is shaping up to be an… more

Next week, Ashgrove State School is hosting the inaugural Ashgrove Literature Festival – a three-day community event running August 19–21, focused on literature and creativity. Seven children's authors will be attending the festival to talk to kids about the books they have written. Mild Manners presents Mik Shida’s Mythographies

With his initial painting career sparked in Brisbane in the mid-2000s, street artist Mik Shida is now recognised globally for his ethereal works splashed across both external surfaces and within gallery walls. His latest works culminate in Mythographies, which has been touring Melbourne and Sydney, and finally lands at Brisbane Powerhouse this week. A multi-layered exhibition of new paintings and hardwood sculptural works, Mythographies draws from inspirations as varied as Science Fiction Art, French Post-Impressionism and Russian Symbolist Art in Mik’s depictions of spiritscapes. The exhibition opens Wednesday August 13 and runs until Monday September 8 in the Mosquito Foyer of Brisbane Powerhouse. more
