Get to know contemporary Queensland artist Madeleine Kelly at QAGOMA’s Open Studio
Every four months, QAGOMA invites a new artist to share their studio practice and provide insights into how they work as part of its riveting Open Studio program. It’s like speed dating, but instead of meeting potential romantic partners, you’re being introduced to a new (and extremely talented) artist. From now until January 31 2021, gallery-goers can get to know Queensland artist Madeleine Kelly by getting a behind-the-scenes look into her artistic processes.
In QAGOMA’s latest Open Studio project, German-born Queensland artist Madeleine Kelly offers insights into the interests and research that informs her practice. A visual artist who primarily works in painting, Madeleine’s abstract works reference the art and literature that she is passionate about, as well as the ways science and language intersect. Her process is often driven by her materials – her two new works for Open Studio are inspired by objects collected over her lifetime as an artist, including vintage science lab glassware passed down by her father in Elective Affinities 2020 and colourful sea sponges collected as a hobby in Structural Affinities 2020.
At QAGOMA’s Open Studio, you’ll be able to delve into Madeleine’s works, as well as some QAGOMA Collection pieces she’s handpicked to appear in the gallery space adjacent to Open Studio at QAG. These works reflect Madeline’s personal heritage (her mother is Peruvian and she was born in Germany), her vast knowledge of art history, a keen curiosity regarding material culture and an abiding love of the natural world. To discover Madeleine Kelly’s works (for free!), head to QAGOMA from now until January 1 2021.
