Australian and Indonesian cultures meet in Opal Vapour

Opal Vapour is an ethereal performance filled with shimmering splendour, shadows and sand, which has been collaboratively created between Indonesian and Australian artists.

Opal Vapour tells haunting tales of mountains, bones and ghostly rivers through contemporary dance and song. Incorporating Javanese Wayang Kulit shadow puppetry, court dance and ancient Java rituals, the dark performance will explore intense physical and emotional states, with moral and spiritual undertones. The performance also encompasses an Indonesian trance-possession ritual.

Performers Jade Dewi Tyas Tunggal and Ria Soemardjo will transfix audiences and evoke Indonesian customs while travelling through Paula van Beek’s lighting landscapes to a score reminiscent of Javanese Gamelan music. Opal Vapour was awarded the Best Dance Production at last year’s Melbourne Fringe Festival and will be at Brisbane Powerhouse until June 8.
