Raise your stein to celebrate ten years of Oktoberfest Brisbane, the country’s biggest German party
Germany is known for a lot of things – its highly expressive language, its iconic selection of food and rich cultural history combine to make it a bucket-list destination for pretty much anyone who hasn’t been already. Undoubtedly one of the biggest celebrations of all things Germanic is the world-famous Oktoberfest, but unfortunately not all of us have the cash to drop on a European getaway. Luckily, we have the next best thing right in our own backyard – Oktoberfest Brisbane! Held over two weekends at the Brisbane Showgrounds in October, this massive party is celebrating its tenth year of bringing us a big ol’ slice of Germany’s culture.
Since starting back in 2007, Oktoberfest Brisbane has quickly grown into an absolutely mammoth event – so much so that it holds the honour of being Australia’s largest incarnation of the festival. People come dressed in dirndls and lederhosen to partake in genuine German experiences, from the food and beers right down to the oompah bands and yodelling. It’s not just about the traditional favourites that we know and love – Oktoberfest Brisbane provides a chance to try authentic eats that are a little outside the box (think oversized Schwabian ravioli and German meatloaf burgers, for a start). Sweet tooths are also in for a serious treat – traditional German desserts such as Black Forest and Bee Sting cakes, Sacher Torter and Apple Strudel will all be available alongside freshly brewed coffee.
As much as the food is a huge part of the Oktoberfest Brisbane experience, it’s also all about embracing every bit of German culture from those in the know. Over the years the festival has gained a reputation for bringing some truly authentic cultural experiences to the table – Bavarian oompah band Münchner Buam bring the energy and party vibes, Heidi the Yodeller shows off her pipes and gets some serious sing-a-longs going, plus the Miss Oktoberfest and Bavarian Strongmen competitions always create some contagious competitive vibes. This year also sees a delightfully boozy and patriotic addition in the form of the Bavarian Brewing Competition – this invitation-only brew-off has challenged eight local brewers to create traditional German beer that us punters get to judge. Huzzah!
Ready to get your oompah on? You can snap up tickets to Oktoberfest Brisbane right now through the official website – prost to that! Don’t forget, we’re also running a giant competition where you and a mate could win a free trip to Germany, which you can try your luck at right here.
