Learn to make cheese and fermented food at Northey Street City Farm
This Saturday February 13, Northey Street City Farm will be buzzing with workshops by Elisabeth Fekonia on cheese making and fermented foods.
If the concept of combining cheese and sauerkraut is dubious to you, know that both can be full of probiotics and good bacteria, which help to maintain healthy digestion and a strong immune system by keeping harmful bacteria in check.
The first of Elisabeth’s workshops is Fetta and an Introduction to Fermented Food from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm. In this workshop you will learn how to make your own fetta cheese at home as well as quark, sauerkraut, kimchi and fermented fruit paste. Elisabeth will also bring along other fermented foods for tasting including sourdough bread and pikelets, cultured butter, miso, tempeh, kombucha tea, beet kvass and fruit wine.
The afternoon workshop is Haloumi and Fermented Foods from 1:30–4:30 pm. Here haloumi cheese, cultured butter, yoghurt, kefir and sour cream are on the menu. You will see how to put life back into pasteurised milk and cream to make healthy dairy products. Of course tasting is part of the workshop experience!
