A feast for the senses – Night Feast unveils this year’s art and performance program

From October 16 to November 10, some of the city’s finest chefs and creatives will be flocking to the lush surrounds of Brisbane Powerhouse for this year’s edition of Night Feast. Beyond the exclusive menus of street food fare, the sensory celebration will also be serving up a slew of free art installations and live performances to nourish your mind and soul. Keep reading to find out what’s in store …

Christian Thompson: The Bidjara artist joins Night Feast with a large-scale installation across the city that’s set to challenge narratives around marginalised communities. Christian made history in 2010 when he became the first Aboriginal Australian admitted into the University of Oxford and has since been appointed as associate professor of RMIT University. The Order of Australia winner has made an inimitable contribution to visual arts, with distinguished works in sculpture, photography, video and performance. In his Night Feast debut, Christian will be unveiling a specially commissioned outdoor exhibition, with the hero work set to be showcased on the walls of Brisbane Powerhouse’s heritage-listed facade.

PING, Gijs van Bon: This light and sound installation adds an interactive and evolving artwork to Night Feast. Created by Dutch artist Gijs van Bon, PING involves a network of kinetic elements that send light and sound across the space to simulate the sensation of a pebble dropped into water. The artwork responds to its environment, activating new waves of illumination and sound according to the audience’s movement. Viewers are invited to engage in the artwork and consider this interplay between presence and artistic expression.

Sunday’s Child, Hannah Bronte: The classic nursery rhyme (‘Sunday’s child is good and gay’) gets reinterpreted in this exhibition from Hannah Bronte. A celebration of queer joy and intimacy, the collection’s range of portraits encompasses diverse, fluid gender and sexual identities within contemporary families and relationships. With the works set against natural backdrops, Sunday’s Child emphasises the connection between individuals and environments to present queer joy and love as equally enduring as the natural world.

TIDE Exhibition, Spencer Tunick: In his first Australian exhibition, New York-based artist Spencer Tunick will be showcasing the works created along the Brisbane River last year in a video exhibition. TIDE Exhibition will traverse the final artworks as well as footage and stories from participants about the empowering and emotional experience. A testament to Brisbane’s diverse population, this rare exhibition will showcase Spencer’s iconic style of surrealist art.

Balangay Spaceport, Leeroy New: The ancient boats of the Philippines (The Balangay) are reimagined in this new sculptural work from Leeroy New. The installation will be taking over the public space of Brisbane Powerhouse with a series of balangay-inspired shapes that have been fused with bio-synthetic alien forms and crafted from bamboo, plastic discards, and other found objects. The collision of objects reveals the tensions between traditional technique and modern waste as Leeroy continues his interest in sci-fi themes, pre-colonial mythology and hybrid ecology. The result is a mesmerising collection of winding sculptures waiting to be explored.

QUIVR DJs: Fortitude Valley’s laneway bar and DJ agency will be bringing the ambience to the Pleasuredome this year. The satiating sonic banquet from QUIVR’s sundry DJs will pair perfectly with Night Feast’s culinary delights. With the likes of Hol Hibbo, Squidgenini, Gina Arena, Sweaty Baby and many more, QUIVR DJs will be fusing the event with everything from smooth bass lines to spicy rhythms every Friday and Saturday night.
