Next to Normal

Acclaimed play Next to Normal arrives at QPAC

The somewhat taboo topic of mental illness recently gained some much-needed attention in the heavily awarded film Silver Linings Playbook and now, a little closer to home, the subject is again being addressed in the production Next to Normal.

Since its stage debut, Next to Normal has won three 2009 Tony Awards (including Best Musical Score), as well as the 2010 Pulitzer Prize. No doubt the Queensland version will thrill audiences just as much, as the creative team at the Oscar Theatre Company is behind the production.

Next to Normal is a foray into a subject that still remains largely controversial, if not brushed under the carpet. The story follows a suburban family’s struggle with mental illness – a fascinating insight into all the highs, lows, humour and turmoil associated with it. Accompanying the touching storyline is a somewhat unexpected musical soundtrack heavily inspired by rock, which keeps the play entirely modern and helps to emphasise the raw emotion present in the plotline.

Intended to begin a conversation on mental afflictions, the theatre show is a story that can resonate with every family. Next to Normal will play QPAC from April 18 to May 4, with tickets to the production available to purchase online.
