Katrin Koenning savours the small things with Near
A family can come in many forms, from single units to huge complex webs that branch throughout different countries and cultures. Whichever the case, the desire to belong to a family is one of the most commonly shared and basic of human desires – it’s this notion that is explored by photographer Katrin Koenning in her latest exhibition.
Near is a collection of Katrin’s powerful photography, which remarkably features her own family as subjects. The project is ongoing, following the theme of giving audiences a glimpse into the complexities and the desire to belong, using one family’s stories as its example.
Near spans multiple years and reflects on the concept of a modern family, exploring migration, illness, separation and heartbreak. Katrin’s stunning photography captures emotions at their most delicate, thanks to a combination of melancholy lighting and the use of everyday activities. It’s through these images that she helps to emphasise the beauty and importance of those moments deemed insignificant.
Brisbane can also lay claim to inspiring a little of Katrin’s artistic ability – while born in Germany she began her prestigious career with photography studies at Griffith University’s Queensland College of Art. See this latest exhibition of her work at Brisbane Powerhouse from September 26 to October 15.
