Literary lions celebrate National Bookshop Day at Avid Reader

Without even realising it, the bookshop plays an important role in the literature lover’s life. From your first copy of The Hungry Caterpillar to many a Penguin classic, the bookshop opens up a world of fantasy and adventure for readers, truly embodying the words of celebrated author C. S. Lewis: “Literature adds to reality, it does not simply describe it.”

Those harvesting a growing appreciation for the world of storytelling can say thank you to the stores that provide them with a decent read – on National Bookshop Day. Set aside the day of August 11 to celebrate the role the bookshop plays in the wider community. The idea is to give thanks to these stores that help to shape the reader and the individual. Hosting some of the party in Brisbane is West End’s Avid Reader, which will be toasting to the bookshop and the reader on Saturday from 8:30 am to 6:00 pm.

And party hard they shall – Avid Reader won an Australian Book Industry Award for its campaign for the 2011 National Bookshop Day and is aiming for this year to be bigger than ever. The store will be employing 15 celebrity booksellers for the day, including John Birmingham, Nick Earls, Matthew Condon and a number of ABC presenters. For those with children, there will also be a special hour dedicated to entertaining the little ones with a few special guest appearances from children’s book authors and publishers. If you like your reading with a little live music, you will be pleased to note that entertainment will be provided by a ukelele band, as well as local group, Halfway.
