Michael Zavros curates for QAG

Brisbane-born painter Michael Zavros has been stirring up a pot of intrigue within the Australian art world as of late. The artist’s realist style of work is also celebrated internationally – he has toured extensively since emerging as a professional artistic juggernaut in 1996 and his work has become a part of numerous public and private collections throughout the world.

The former alumni of the Queensland College of Art will soon be displaying his artistic eye just down the road from his former educational home, at QAG. From Saturday March 23, Michael will partake in the Artist’s Choice series. This will see him play curator, selecting a choice of 70 works from the Queensland Art Gallery and Queensland Museum collections. The pieces are crafted from a selection of both historical and artistic works, and each focuses on lavish interior spaces. It’s through Michael’s curation that he has created an exploration of opulence – the works manage to question contemporary beauty, decadence, ego and consumerism.

If you wish to witness some of the artistic creations made by Michael’s own hand, and you are south-bound for Sydney in the next few months, you will be able to enjoy his talents at the Gallery of NSW’s Archibald Prize, for which he is a finalist.
