Let loose and show off your moves at Metro Arts’ Mad Dance Festival 2022

While we may cut shapes at house parties and have the occasional boogie whilst bar hopping, most of us are in no way professional-level dancers (sorry in-denial amateurs). If you want to see some of the pros step up to the plate with their ace freestyle moves, then groove on over to Mad Dance Festival 2022. This celebration of Queensland’s street-dance scene will see some of the best local b-boys, and b-girls, poppers, lockers and hip-hop heavy-weights congregate for one big dance party.

From May 29 to June 18, Mad Dance Festival is serving Step Up realness with a two-week roster of awe-inspiring performances, creative projects, dance battles, workshops, artist talks and activations at Metro Arts. Kicking off the freestyling festivities will be the Alexander Community Throwdown, which will be delivering vogue realness to Metro Arts with help from the always fierce House of Alexander. The team will once again congregate to strike a pose at the Alexander Vogue Night, which combines ballroom and voguing while celebrating all bodies and gender identities. The creative masterminds of Pink Matter will be melding highly choreographed and freestyle street dance in the inspirational and energetic production Betwixt, which will headline this year’s Mad Dance Festival. Next up is Rhythmology, which is set to celebrate the diversity of ethnic cultures, supported by a catchy playlist and a line-up of local legends. You’ll also be able to bask in creative developments like the powerful production Thirteen Years, thought-provoking piece This Time It’s Personal, the creative explosion that is The Sad Clown and unique one-woman show Distinct

Those who want to pick up a few new moves can join free community dance class Shake Down, where dynamo dance teachers from Mad Dance House will be leading easy-to-follow choreography in the alfresco setting of West Village Green, or don your dancing shoes and let loose at the fun (and free!) Daily Dance at Dusk. Practised enough? Now you can show off your excellent dance skills at the Mad Dance Festival Battle, where some of the best street-dance talents go head-to-head in an explosive afternoon of freeform dance. Once you’ve worked your body, fill your noggin at Artist Roundtable: The Future of Street Dance in Brisbane, where you can learn more about Brisbane’s burgeoning street-dance scene from leaders in the creative industry.

Don’t miss some of the best dancing talent Brisbane has to offer at the Mad Dance Festival at Metro Arts. To book your tickets, pop, lock and drop over here – go on, shake a leg!
