Be charmed by the magic and madness of Matilda The Musical

When you think crazy, kooky, brilliant and heart-warming, one name that immediately springs to mind is Roald Dahl. The timeless wealth of Roald’s iconic narratives have often been the subject of adaptation, but there has been none quite like Matilda The Musical before. Using Roald’s story as the frame, the visionary team of Tim Minchin and Dennis Kelly has created an internationally successful knockout of a production that is coming to QPAC from November 25, 2016 to January 29, 2017 to spread the magic.

Based on Roald Dahl’s beloved novel about an extraordinary young girl with a razor-sharp mind and boundless ambition, Matilda The Musical follows the titular character as she dreams of breaking free from her belittling parents and wicked school headmaster. With a little help from her friends and the ever-sweet Miss Honey, Matilda takes a stand to turn her destiny around. Dennis Kelly’s script combines perfectly with the music and lyrics of Australia’s own Tim Minchin to create a musical that’s accolades speak for it – the show has racked up a seriously impressive swag of awards including Helpmanns, Tonys and an Olivier to name a few.

Roald Dahl’s legendary tales were pretty much made for adaptations – from silver screen homages like the timeless Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory and Wes Anderson’s stop-motion masterpiece Fantastic Mr. Fox, the stories often touted for children have proven time again that they can touch young and old alike. Matilda The Musical is no exception – whilst kids will be enthralled by the performance, there’s nothing fluffy about it. The Royal Shakespeare Company has taken this direction on board, creating a show that hits all the right notes.

If this has got you feeling like you need a little dose of magic in your life, you can grab tickets to Matilda The Musical via QPAC.
