Take a look inside the superhero realm at Australia’s biggest Marvel exhibition

Everyone loves a good superhero, and nowhere else knows how to craft one quite like Marvel. The iconic company has been gifting us with some of the most bold, brave and badass characters for more than 70 years now, growing a fictional universe that has captivated people the world over. Delving into the connections of all of these famous friends and foes is Marvel: Creating the Cinematic Universe, a massive exhibition that has landed exclusively at the Gallery of Modern Art. Whether you’re a die-hard fan or your knowledge of comic books spans about as far as Aqua’s smash hit ‘Cartoon Heroes’, this exhibition will blow you away.

Seeing as we’re already hit you with some facts and figures, let’s go a little deeper – Marvel: Creating the Cinematic Universe is a collection of more than 500 artworks from the company’s own archives and private collections. That’s a whole lot of very cool things to see, including Thor’s hammer, Captain America’s shield and Iron Man’s armour just to name-drop a few. Expertly curated by the heroes (heh) at QAGOMA, the exhibit offers us a behind-the-scenes look at the work of production designers, storyboarding and pre‑visualisation artists, costume and prop designers, and visual effects artists.

Just like any good superhero, Creating the Cinematic Universe is not what is seems on the surface – there are a range of accompanying activities that take this exhibition to heights worthy of the buildings that Spider-Man scales. To kick the immersion up a notch, the Gallery’s Australian Cinémathèque will screen all the Marvel Cinematic Universe films throughout the duration of the exhibit – expect to see all of your favourites as well as this year’s brand new Spider-Man: Homecoming. As always, there is a killer Up Late program that coincides with the exhibition. The Friday night music and art sessions include guests such as Art vs Science, Black Cab, Habits, Olympia, Models and NO ZU.

Marvel: Creating the Cinematic Universe is open right now – you can grab tickets to the exhibition here, the movie screenings here and Up Late sessions here.
