The mandolin gets a makeover at Australian Brandenburg Orchestra: Avi Avital
When you think of people shredding on their instruments, usually your first port of call is something like a weirdly pointy electric guitar or an elaborate drum kit, right? Well, the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra has got a surprise for you – Avi Avital is joining them at QPAC on Tuesday November 8 to prove that rockstars come in all forms (even with mandolins).
Since his sold-out Australian Brandenburg Orchestra debut in 2014, audiences have been eagerly awaiting the return of Avi Avital and his mandolin madness to our shores. Based in Berlin, Avi’s talents have taken him around the world to play everything from Bach to Bartok and then some. One of the best parts of Avi’s shows is the approach he takes to his instrument – there is a focus on the uniqueness of the mandolin and its sound. You’ve got to admit that the mandolin is pretty obscure, but in the hands of the master it becomes a beacon of electrified entertainment.
Avi’s stage presence has been compared to the likes of Jimi Hendrix and Mick Jagger, making a name for himself as a dynamic and charismatic character in a scene that can often be written off as old-fashioned or rigid. Throwing off the misconceptions of classical music, Avi manages to retain the integrity of the art form whilst adding a modern edge, creating a fusion unlike anything audiences have ever seen before. There is a true sense of kinship and connection between himself and the Orchestra, creating an atmosphere that’s purely palpable.
There are still some spots left for this one-night-only experience, so you can nab a seat through QTIX.
