The art of Charles Blackman showcased in Lure of the Sun

Charles Blackman was one of Australia’s most important artists, and will have 50 works shown in a new exhibition showing how Brisbane was a major influence on his art throughout his career.

Tracing the impact of the friendships and connections forged throughout several visits to Queensland in the 1940s, Lure of the Sun: Charles Blackman in Queensland examines the effect the sunshine state had on the acclaimed artist as evidenced in his work from the period. Boasting more than 50 paintings and works on paper sourced from several private and state collections, Lure of the Sun is a comprehensive look at the evolution of one of Australia’s finest, set against a backdrop of iconic Queensland imagery.

Famous works in the exhibition are taken from the ‘Schoolgirl’, ‘Faces and flowers’ and ‘Alice’ series, as well as Brisbane-inspired works from other notable Australian artists Laurence Hope, Laurence Collinson and Jon Molvig. The exhibition will run from November 7 to January 31 at the Queensland Art Gallery, with a special discussion between exhibition curator Michael Hawker and Meredith McKinney, one of the subjects of Blackman’s 1955 painting, ‘The family’ on November 7.
