Loco Maricon Amor at Metro Arts

Life after death in Loco Maricon Amor

The relationship between Salvador Dali and Federico Garcia Lorca is a controversial topic amongst art circles, surrounded by rumours that have remained well after their deaths. Like star-crossed lovers Romeo and Juliet before them, Salvador and Federico were thought to have pursued a forbidden romance amidst the conservative society of early 20th century Spain.

It’s not hard to see what drew each to the other, with both men considered to be revolutionary thinkers in their poetic and artistic creations respectively. With paintbrush and pen in hand they were constantly evolving and experimenting in their work, despite the restrictions and expectations of the time – they were a part of a cultural revolution underway.

Loco Maricon Amor is a fictional piece developed by The Danger Ensemble, which celebrates the rumoured relationship of Federico and Salvador. It is set in between the worlds of life and death and explores the power that memory and love hold against it. Just like the revolutionary thinking of the two subjects, Loco Maricon Amor is unique – a cabaret that entwines flamenco, song, imagery and politics. The show’s creators claim it to be an investigation into the way love can alter existence and persist long after death. Audience members will be able to see slivers of romance, as well as tragedy throughout the show, which features Salvador, his late wife Gala and Federico.
