2020 vision – La Boite Theatre reveals its fearless and provocative season program for next year
Let’s be honest – 95 years is a bloody long time to be doing anything, let alone in the often-fickle and ever-changing arts scene. The local legends at La Boite Theatre have been champions of fearless and unforgettable storytelling for almost a century, and throughout that time have managed to represent the adventurous and alternative while always keeping things fresh. Coming into 2020, you’d best believe that this team of creative wizards has pulled out all the stops to assemble a program that kicks serious ass – including two world premieres, one Australian premiere and the return of a family favourite.
La Boite’s 2020 season announcement is packed with the daring, passion and deep connections that has kept the company going for so long, amplifying critical voices and spotlighting untold stories that are bound to get people talking. Next year’s offering brings together some of our city’s most seasoned performers with powerful emerging talents to showcase killer theatre. The season opens with The Neighbourhood, a brand-new work and companion piece to 2017’s critically acclaimed The Village, that follows stories of asylum seekers told by asylum seekers. Next up, punters can also look forward to the return of HWY, bringing with it a whole year’s worth of additional events dotted throughout the 2020 calendar.
The next show of the season is St Joan of the Stockyards, the sort of play that will light a fire in your belly – multiple award-winning playwright Mark Rogers and director Sanja Simić have teamed up for this theatrical battle cry and critique on capitalism. Families are in for a treat when Grug takes to the stage, brought to life in collaboration with The Windmill Theatre Co. Following this (and fresh from a critically acclaimed Sydney season) is The Little Ones Theatre Company’s queer re-telling of The Happy Prince, one of Oscar Wilde’s most beloved tales. Closing out the 2020 season is the world premiere Brothers Book Club, a knee-slapping riot of a show written and performed by The Mamas Boys – you’ll get laughs, tension and plenty to think about from the Claire Christian-directed outfit.
As if this wasn’t enough to get you all kinds of excited for the coming year, La Boite has gone and sweetened the news with a very exciting deal – you can get your hands on $35 tickets for its 2020 shows.
