The school year is over, folks, which means those with little ones have until late January to fill their calendars with plenty of kid-friendly fun. If you’re struggling to find things to keep the kiddies entertained this holiday season, Brisbane City has a range of fun and free activities for you and your youngster to enjoy. From tiny door scavenger hunts to Christmas stocking decorating, here are our top picks of the best kid-friendly events happening in The City.

Immerse yourself in the magic of Christmas at this captivating light show
From December 8–24, witness Brisbane’s iconic City Hall transform into a Christmas wonderland with a vibrant audio-visual retelling a very merry Christmas story. The Lott by Golden Casket City Hall Lights will illuminate City Hall from 7:30 pm to midnight every evening from now until Christmas Eve. Trust us, this is a must-see for festive folk of all ages. 

Bring the little ones to Queen Street Mall to experience an explosion of Christmas cheer
There will be no shortage of Christmas action this holiday season, with this year’s Christmas on Queen taking over the Queen Street Mall all throughout December. Take a break from ticking off Santa’s wish list to enjoy some pop-up performances and roaming entertainment, which are sure to have you Jingle Bell Rockin’. Taking place from 11:00 am to 2:30 pm daily and 4:30–8:00 pm during late night trade, there will be plenty of opportunities to join in on all of the festive fun.

Embark on a tiny door scavenger hunt through The City
Hit the streets and uncover a number of tiny Christmas-themed doors sprinkled throughout The City. Each whimsical handmade door is a joyous tribute to the holiday season and tacking them down promises to be an engaging, free and festive activity for the entire family. You can find these tiny doors scattered through Queen Street Mall, King George Square, Edward Street, Elizabeth Arcade and Burnett Lane – happy hunting!

Take a walk through Uptown’s whimsical wonderland
Uptown’s Wonderland Workshop (located on level one next to the Wonderland Emporium) is where you’ll find a spectacular selection of creative workshops, Insta-worthy photo ops and more. From December 1–24, Brisbane’s very own tinsel queen Rachel Burke will present free family-friendly workshops – from bauble-making and stocking crafting to gingerbread decorating – which will run from 10:00 am daily. Snap some Insta-worthy selfies in front of the sparkly backdrop and elevate your Christmas photo with playful props and bedazzled accessories – no ugly sweaters here. 

Sing along to all of your festive favourites at the Starz Christmas Show
Experience a live-music extravaganza in the heart of The City at the annual Starz Christmas Show. Featuring performances from local singers and dancers, this magical musical event will take over the Queen Street Mall stage at 5:00 pm and 6:00 pm from December 16 to December 24. Ensure your vocal chords are warmed up, as you’ll no doubt be singing along to all of the Christmas classics.

Toy soldiers and Christmas ornaments will come alive at this Christmas spectacular
A festive story featuring some cheeky Christmas ornaments, tinsel-laden trees and toy soldiers will take over the Queen Street Mall stage on December 15 and 22 at 5:00, 6:00 and 7:00 pm. When Miss Christmas sprinkles magical fairy dust over her four favourite ornaments, festive frivolity ensues as they spring to life in an unexpected turn of events.

A spectacular selection of summer holiday fun awaits at Museum of Brisbane
Head to Museum of Brisbane these school holidays for some non-stop family fun, with a super-fun event taking place everyday from December 9 to January 21. From flower-inspired exhibitions and floral sculpture workshops to clay classes and eye spy adventures, there’s something for every youngster to enjoy. An exciting line-up of free and paid activities are available, so head to the MOB website for more information on each event.
