Relish a weekend of flicks and frolicking at the John Waters 70th Birthday Movie Fest
You’re invited to celebrate a milestone – John Waters is turning the big 7 – 0! There probably won’t be any Cheezels or fairy bread, but there will be a program of divine entertainment running across the weekend to celebrate the boundary-pushing film maker.
Cult film director John Waters is turning 70, and to celebrate his special day, Kristian Fletcher is proudly presenting a weekend movie retrospective across two exciting venues. The John Waters 70th Birthday Movie Fest will kick off on April 16 at Fish Lane Studios – a venue located on the second floor of the Fox Hotel, which will be cleverly converted into the ultimate John Waters-themed space. Guests can take the opportunity to ogle private artwork, movie clips, posters, and interactive exhibits or hang out in the chill-out room where they can take in some rare clips and interview footage.
As day creeps into dusk, the space will transform into a 1960s dance party, where a live DJ will spin pop and rock ditties from the iconic era. After some serious booty shaking, guests will be treated to a 7:00 pm screening of the 1988 John Waters cult classic, Hairspray. There will a prize for best hairdo, so tease that beehive sky high! The night will end with a ‘Divine party’ to honour Miss Divine herself – John Waters’ 300 pound transvestite ‘superstar’ who starred in most of his earlier films and went on to have success with dance hits in the 1980s.
Closing out the birthday festivities on April 17, guests are invited to New Farm Cinemas to experience John Waters’ own unique version of Smell-O-Vision – ‘Odorama’ – which will be accompanied by a screening of 1981’s Polyester starring Divine and Tab Hunter.
