Achieve a state of zen at the International Yoga Day Festival

People all around the world are downward dogging on Tuesday June 21 to celebrate international yoga day. If you enjoy a bit of yoga yourself, grab a mat and head to the Celebration Lawn at the Roma Street Parklands and take part in a spiritually nourishing event on the Sunday before, June 19.

The United Nations declared June 21 as the first international yoga day last year, and now the 2016 event seeks to advance the awareness of the holistic benefits attributed to yoga as well as promoting community harmony. In 2015, over 2000 yoga lovers congregated for the annual International Yoga Day Festival, a celebration of yoga, its health benefits and spiritual nature. This year, the International Yoga Day Festival will take place on Sunday June 19 and will offer a huge timetable of yoga sessions, interspersed with live entertainment and festival stalls.

Start the day with some mantra breath meditation, before moving through stand and balance sessions and twist and bend workshops. Kirtan band Pralad ‘n the Chants will be performing some sublime Indian melodies and chants, while kids can take part in eco art and craft workshops, song singing and yoga games. Browse market stalls offering skincare goods, henna tattoos, jewellery, candles and yoga gear and then chow down on some nourishing vegetarian whole foods, juices and treats from local food vendors. Head to the festival website to register. A festival after party will also be taking place at The Mantra Room in West End from 5:00 pm.
