Each for equal – where to celebrate International Women’s Day in Brisbane

Round up your favourite female-supporting friends – International Women’s Day is nearly upon us! Taking place on Sunday March 8, this worldwide celebration shines a light on the awesome achievements of ladies from all corners of the globe and calls on everyone to rally for change to achieve gender equity. So you can celebrate girl power in all its multi-faceted glory, we’ve rounded up some of the coolest events happening around Brisbane from thought-provoking seminars to charity long lunches and wellness workshops.

International Women’s Day Afternoon Tea, Fridays Riverside: On Saturday March 7, relax riverside and enjoy an afternoon of sipping and snacking at Fridays Riverside. International Women’s Day Drinks, Bakery Lane: To celebrate the achievements and contribution of Brisbane girl bosses, make haste to The Lanes for some well deserved drinks on Friday March 6 and toast to empowering female entrepreneurs and women. Women in Walrus, The Walrus Club: Join The Walrus Club on Sunday March 8 for an all-female bar takeover, where the talented crew will shake, stir and conquer as they enter into an epic cocktail showdown. The free event kicks off from 5:30 pm, with live music by the awesome Betty Smokes & the Forgetaboudits bringing all the good vibes.

International Women’s Day Lunch, Edhen Bar & Kitchen: Head to Edhen Bar & Kitchen on Saturday March 7 in West End for a flavourful two-course lunch for only $55 per person, including a glass of sparkling on arrival. Ladies Night, Mr Mista: The Valley dance destination known as Mr Mista is hosting a ladies Sunday session for you and your gang of movers and groovers. Mr Mista will be donating $5 from every cocktail sold to charity Small Steps 4 Hannah. There will also be female DJ’s (DJ Eljai & DJ Mikki Blue) accompanying Cutloose from 4:00 pm so you can dance the night away! Get your squad together and book a booth for that long overdue dinner and drinks.

High Tea, Greenhouse Canteen and Bar: In celebration of International Womens Day, Greenhouse Canteen and Bar is hosting its first High Tea of the year on Sunday March 8 from 1:00 pm. International Women’s Day Fun Run, City Botanic Gardens: Along with an exciting new venue for the event in 2020, the International Women’s Day Fun Run has two exciting new courses – including a a six-kilometre and a ten-kilometre option. Those lucky to who have registered in time (the event is at capacity), will cross the iconic Story Bridge and pass through Kangaroo Point, taking in incredible city views. The best bit? Women in Greek Cafes Panel, State Library of Queensland: In conjunction with the Meet Me at The Paragon exhibition at the State Library, the Women in Greek Cafes panel on Tuesday March 10 explores the unsung lives of Greek migrant women who spent many hours behind the cafe counter. The panel discussion brings together three women whose lives were shaped in the cafe of the early 20th century – they were the wives, mothers, daughters, of Greek cafe proprietors, and in some instances, business owners themselves. International Women’s Day Soiree, Hanworth House: Celebrate International Women’s Day under the stars at Hanworth House on Thursday March 5. Be greeted by bubbles, bellinis and canapes from 6:00 pm and listen to some kick-ass female guest speakers. There will also be some amazing door prizes to win, with all donations taken at the event going towards Call Time on Melanoma and The Butterfly Foundation. RSVP here.

Sipping Sundays, Ivory Tusk: Be treated to a feast fit for a Queen at Palm Springs-inspired bar and eatery, Ivory Tusk on Sunday March 8. Foundations 4 Every Woman, The Wild Movement: On Sunday March 8, wellness platform Building Elite is taking the opportunity to dive into the four pillars of health and wellness (movement, strength, nutrition and connection) to educate and empower women to create strong foundations for their holistic health. Hear from experts in their specialising fields including Alesha Pimm (a sports scientist and holistic women’s strength and performance coach), Renee Ludlow (pregnancy and post-partum specialist and women’s strength coach) Kate Feely (accredited practicing dietitian) and Jess Staskiewicz (holistic psychologist). Feeling Good! A celebration of Female Identifying Creatives, Mayne Line: Brisbane artist and practitioner collective Mayne Line is celebrating female creatives with a local maker market and workshop afternoon on Sunday March 8. For the eager shoppers, there will be stalls from Shani Finch, Sophie Evans Art, Trash Binn, Jesse Simm, Ebony and many, many more. Art Based Workshop, Conscious Collective: Take a self-care approach this International Women’s Day at Conscious Collective’s art-based workshop. The Lady Musgrave Trust Cocktail Party, Blackbird Bar & Grill: Tipples and tapas await at this annual cocktail party for a good cause, which raises much-needed funds to help the nearly 10,000 homeless women in Queensland. GirlsRock Fundraiser, Crowbar: Get your girl power on at Crowbar’s fundraising party with Girls Rock Brisbane, featuring an incredible lineup of panelists, acoustic acts and DJs. Enjoy an afternoon barbecue and a women in music panel hosted by Kiley Gaffney and featuring Maz Devita, Viv Mellish, Summer King, Ruby-Jean McCabe, Grace Pashley, Kellie Loyd and Monica Sottile. The air will be filled with sweet acoustic tunes from Hope D MusicBridget Brandolini Music and Hollie Harrison and a DJ set from Hallie in the beer garden. International Women’s Day Concert, Queensland Conservatorium: Women of Noise is hosting the third annual International Women’s Day Concert featuring the talented students, staff and alumni of the Queensland Conservatorium of Music Griffith University. Treat your ears to a free afternoon of music making, with any donations made on the day going towards the Firesticks Alliance Indigenous Corporation.

International Women’s Day Rock Painting and Lunch, Nundah Community Centre: Nundah Neighbourhood Centre is once again hosting its annual International Women’s Day event. This year the team will be celebrating the diversity and resilience of women whilst also facilitating conversation around gender equality. Join in the conversation, paint some rocks and enjoy some snacks with your fellow gals.
