Science and art combine to make a dancing robot in WTF16’s Huang Yi & KUKA

You read that headline correctly – dancing robot. The Brisbane Powerhouse will be hosting an inventive performance involving supreme mechanical engineering as part of the WTF2016.

If you’ve ever had the misfortune of pairing up with someone with two left feet on the dance floor, you might have at one point wished they were a robot instead – precise and accurate in its movements. Renowned choreographer Huang Yi took the idea a step further, sourcing a robot that could match his movements in a display of organic and technological harmony. With the help of modern robotics, Huang has created a piece of dance theatre that draws upon hardships endured as a child, combining the cold and mechanical movements of a machine with his own fluid and dynamic dance. Huang Yi & KUKA will be staged at the Brisbane Powerhouse as part of WTF2016 from February 18–20.

The idea for Huang Yi & KUKA originated from Huang’s own suppression of emotions as a child, and a desire to dance with a robot one day in the future. In 2010, Huang secured a sponsorship from the Quanta Arts Foundation, which allowed him to realise his dream. Using a computer program, his robot KUKA and precise choreography, Huang has created an innovative and widely acclaimed piece of performance theatre.
