Holding the Man, La Boite Theatre

Holding the Man opens at La Boite Theatre

With the gay marriage debate making headlines as the British Parliament votes to legalise same-sex marriage, there could not be a more prominent time for Australian production Holding the Man to return to Brisbane.

Opening at La Boite Theatre this weekend, Holding the Man is a poignant love story based on Timothy Conigrave’s best-selling memoir of the same name. First published by Penguin Books in 1995 – just a few month’s after Timothy’s death – Holding the Man tells the story of Tim’s life, focusing centrally on his relationship with his partner of 15 years John Caleo.

Spanning 15 years, Tim and John’s relationship weathers disapproval, separation, temptation and testing positive to HIV – from the first meeting as teenagers to the last breath. First adapted for the stage in 2006 by Tommy Murphy and directed by David Berthold, this timely production returns with an all-new cast. A dialogue that defies age, sexuality and culture, this award-winning story is strikingly honest and surprisingly funny, despite the plot concluding with tragedy.

Holding the Man is showing at La Boite Theatre in Kelvin Grove from February 16 until March 16.
