GOMA’s ‘Get Down!’ prepares for its last curtain call

Through its Get Down! Dance on Film Since the 1970s retrospective, GOMA has taken audiences on a journey through some of the best dance films.

Regardless of age, race, gender or social status, a click of the heels, shimmy of the shoulder, bop of the head (or all three skillfully performed at once) never fails to put you in good spirits. Celebrating the role of dance as a form of self-expression, and the role of dance in contemporary cinema, GOMA’s Get Down! retrospective has taken audiences on a journey through some of cinema’s greatest dance flicks. At heart of each film chosen for the program is a story where characters rely on dance as form of escape or a means to chase their dreams.

After starting with a crowd singing along to the tunes of Grease, and showcasing Dirty Dancing, Chicago and Saturday Night Fever, the retrospective is moving into its final toe-tapping days. Classics Grease, Cabaret and A Chorus Line are all showing over the weekend, before festivities conclude on Wednesday December 5 with a screening of Footloose at 6:00 pm, followed by Fame at 8:00 pm.

@ GOMA, until December 5.
