Explore the science of your senses at this fine-dining and film experience

Most people can relate to the intrinsic link between smell and memory – whether it’s passing a stranger wearing the same perfume of an ex-lover or coming across a flower that used to grow in your grandmother’s garden, these unexpected moments have the power to transport us back to certain points in time. If you’ve ever been curious as to why these senses are so connected, we’ve found a delicious event to help you discover the links. As part of the World Science Festival Brisbane’s Empire of Our Senses: The Body and Mind in Science program, GOMA has curated a stunning film and dining experience based around the facts of food and memories. Keep Saturday March 24 clear in your diary for a true sensory feast!

GOMA Restaurant and GOMA’s Australian Cinémathèque are presenting this stunning sensory experience centred on The Empire of Scents, a film that poetically captures the profound impact smell has on our memory, emotions and interaction with the each other. Following a viewing of the film, patrons will be invited to dine on a specially crafted meal inspired by scent, expertly curated to reflect the themes of the film. You won’t be going in blind – sensory scientist Dr Sandra Olarte Mantilla and guest sommelier Brenton Jull will guide guests through the unique experience.

The Empire of Scents screening will truly set the scene for a meal to remember – after all, the film takes a deep dive into the science behind why smell is such a powerful trigger for our memory. Armed with the knowledge and insights from the film, diners will be able to truly appreciate the connections between what’s on the plate in front of them and how the aromas affect their food journey.

Ready to go on a sensory journey? You can pick up tickets to The Empire of Scents film and dinner event through GOMA.
