Get up early and go garage sailing

Gone are the days where rummaging through other people’s seconds resulted in red cheeks. Op shops, car boot sales and garage sales were potential social disaster zones as a child, for fear of running into someone from school while your parents scoured for a bargain amongst others’ junk. But slowly op shops became cool, vintage was the new black, and the cheaper an item, the more boasting potential. Now with whole stores dedicated to overpriced secondhand goods, the weekend garage sale is a refreshing option on your hunt for homely wares.

There’s still a lot of junk out there – after all, this is stuff people no longer want themselves – but sometimes you’ll stumble upon a garage sale of dreams where moving overseas, an engorged book collection or the annual spring clean means piles of pretty goods scattered across front lawns. One man’s trash is, after all, another man’s treasure.

Taking the petite garage sale nationwide this weekend is The Garage Sale Trail. With almost 5000 garage sales registered across Australia, sign up online to discover sales happening near you and plan your route for the day. Supporting sustainability, community and charitable ideals, have fun discovering new treasures or de-clutter the cupboards and host your own this Saturday, making a little pocket money along the way.

Garage sales are still a case of early bird catches the worm though, so be prepared to get up super early with your piggy bank coins ready for the spending. Polite garage sailing etiquette includes not arriving before the specified time and bartering only as you would expect someone to do to you.
