Go on a grown-up treasure hunt at the Garage Sale Trail

What do a beachfront apartment, a jetpack, a helicopter and an alpaca have in common? This isn’t the start of a bad joke – these are all items that have been up for grabs at one huge event. The Garage Sale Trail is happening nationwide on Saturday October 22 to bring the fun back into spring-cleaning, inviting punters to bring out their trash and treasure for a great cause.

As you may have gathered, this isn’t your average yard sale. This year, the Garage Sale Trail has a projected 15,000 sales happening right across Australia in every corner of the country. Born from an idea to reduce illegal curb-side dumping, the Trail has grown into an event aimed at reducing waste to landfill, finding treasure, de-cluttering, making some extra cash and meeting the people next door. The listings can get pretty wild – this year the multi-million dollar yacht that featured in Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby just happens to be up for grabs. And you thought garage sales were just full of junk!

Aside from nabbing some killer bargains, the Garage Sale Trail is all about the good vibes. Founders Darryl Nichols and Andrew Valder place an emphasis on the strong community element that can be fostered by the simple art of making connections – what better way to meet your neighbours than bonding over your mutual love of saving the planet? The humble garage sale has a huge positive environmental impact, with the last event alone saving nearly three million items from a not-so-eco-friendly landfill fate.

If this sounds like your cup of tea, you can register your own garage sale through the Garage Sale Trail website. Get on board that trash-to-treasure train!
