Two exhibitions will open at Lethbridge Gallery in Paddington this weekend, with Ian de Raat’s For the Birds and John Morris’ With My Little Eye running until August 14. John Morris’ work is informed by research into skeletal bone, muscular structure and fashion imagery, with his resulting intricate wood carvings incorporating found objects and assemblages within faces. In contrast to these contemporary sculptures, Ian de Raat draws subject and technique inspiration from classical Flemish still life painters to create his oil paintings. Each painting houses a multitude of thin layers of transparent colour glazes, with each layer taking weeks to dry. Opening drinks will be held in the afternoon this Saturday August 2, while Ian will hold a hands-on oil painting workshop for beginner and intermediate painters on Saturday August 9.
