Flickerfest, Judith Wright Centre

FLiCKERFEST kicks off the year at Judith Wright Centre

Australia’s leading short-film festival for the past 22 years, FLiCKERFEST returns to the Judith Wright Centre this week. The final program features the 100 most creative and cutting-edge short films from Australia and abroad, a curation that has been whittled down from a record 2,300 entries.

The opening night this Thursday February 21 will feature a collection of the best Australian shorts, with the Friday and Saturday sessions showing the best in international short films. From the local film scene is Darling Downs-born filmmaker S. P. Krause and his film Huge, which delves into comedian Barry Branch’s (played by John Batchelor) big break into movie stardom. Captive is the second local offering, directed by Michael Noonan and starring Brisbane’s own Margi Brown Ash.

The Captain, directed by Nash Edgerton, was the only Australian short film screened at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival last month, while 3D animated short film A Cautionary Tail stars the voices of Cate Blanchett, David Wenham and Barry Otto. Bringing the best in bite-sized cinema to local screen, FLiCKERFEST exposes audiences to an array of the usually hidden talents of our film industry.
