Let’s get weird – The Flaming Lips bring iconic album The Soft Bulletin to the stage for one night only

The word ‘prolific’ can tend to get thrown around when it comes to musical output, but one band that has truly earned this adjective is The Flaming Lips. From humble beginnings in Oklahoma way back in 1983, the band has continued to shock, surprise and innovate over the course of its 36-year tenure in the often-fickle music scene. Amongst The Flaming Lips’ wildly experimental (yet always entertaining) catalogue lies The Soft Bulletin, the band’s beloved 1999 album that saw them break through to a whole new audience. To celebrate the album’s 20th birthday, The Flaming Lips are coming to The Fortitude Music Hall to play a one-off show on Saturday September 28 – and you’re going to want to be there.

The Flaming Lips are no stranger to reinvention, but the release of The Soft Bulletin truly marked a turning point in the band’s career. Previously pigeonholed as a little too weird for the mainstream, this breakout release saw The Flaming Lips getting radio airplay and more widespread recognition. This exclusive one-off show will see the band perform The Soft Bulletin in its glorious entirety, plus a selection of songs from the band’s canon of absolute treasures. With a catalogue that spans decades, punters can expect a serious spread of tunes to come up.

We chatted to impossibly charismatic frontman Wayne Coyne ahead of the show, and can confirm that punters are in for an absolute sensory overload of the best kind. The words glitter, confetti, blow-up stuff and smoke were used (amongst other terms), as well as the assurance that a Flaming Lips show is as good for the people in the back row as it is for those right at the front barrier. One thing is for sure – while you may never know exactly what you’re in for at a Flaming Lips concert, it’s guaranteed to get freaky.

Want to witness the spectacle for yourself? You can grab some of the last remaining tickets to The Flaming Lips at The Fortitude Music Hall right here.
