Five simple ways you can support your local after the floods

What a week it’s been. Floods have ravaged parts of Brisbane and as the water begins to recede, the very big job of cleaning up will kick off. If you feel a little bit helpless on what to do and don’t know how you can lend a helping hand, we’ve listed five simple ways you can support your local after the floods – because every small action matters.

If they have reopened, and it’s safe to do so, go in and spend some money
A lot of businesses remain closed as the long and arduous process of cleaning takes place after the floods. But, in true Queensland style, our local businesses are keen to open their doors as soon as possible and the first thing they’d love to see is your smiling face. So consider this your excuse to grab that morning coffee, splurge on some takeaway or pick up some treats without feeling guilty – because you’re supporting your local!

Buy a gift voucher to use in the coming months
Another great way to support your local business is to buy a gift voucher –and bonus, vouchers are the perfect present for when you simply cannot be bothered hitting the shops. So whether you’ve got to secure a gift for a friends birthday, an anniversary or you want to get a head-start on Mother’s Day (oh, how we say this every year), consider snagging a gift voucher to use when your business of choice is back on their feet. Future you will be oh-so-thankful.

If they have an online store, shop online
We will admit it now as we consider this a safe space – we are addicted to online shopping. Any excuse to jump online and pack a virtual bag with trinkets we do (and most of the time, definitely don’t) need, we’ll jump at the chance. If you can’t get out and about this weekend as road and business closures continue, then consider jumping online and shopping up a storm at your favourite store.

Keep an eye on socials for any call-outs
Hopping on to Instagram right now might be a little confronting, especially for those who were in Brisbane for the 2011 floods, but it’s a great way to see who needs a little assistance. If you have the time and means to lend a helping hand, hop on to social media and respond to community call-outs for help. Your gumboots will get a work out and you might get your hands dirty but trust us when we say, good karma will come your way.

Share the love online
With many venues having to close earlier in the year due to the ongoing pandemic and staff shortages, and now the floods, the hospitality industry has once again been hit hard – and they are going to need your help to get back on their feet. Once you’ve popped in to your venue of choice for some cheeky cocktails, a delicious dinner or a takeaway bite, make sure to leave them a positive online review and throw them a few likes/comments/shares on social media to boost their engagement. They’ll appreciate the extra love and you’ll feel all the better for giving it.

Good Samaritan bonus round: If you do have some spare time up your sleeve, consider joining the Mud Army and help clean up Brisbane’s streets. Clean-up efforts will focus on helping areas that have been inundated with water, including homes and businesses. Those eager to lend a helping hand – as well as those looking to obtain assistance in their area – can click here to lodge their details.
