Public dance Fifteen to cause a shift among commuters
The hour of the commuter can be a rough, hasty time – nine-to-fivers race towards public transport, tired from a long day or eager to get home for a comforting dinner. Interjecting this busy time of day with a spot of the unusual this week is public dance performance Fifteen.
The creation of local choreographer and dancer Liesel Zink, Fifteen will unleash three dancers, an actor and a musician into peak-hour commuter traffic in the Queen Street Mall, exploring the unwritten rules that govern the way people behave in crowded public spaces.
While audience members are offered headphones to immerse themselves in the live soundtrack the dancers are moving to, passersby will be left in the lurch, experiencing the same surprise a flash mob causes to the unsuspecting. Responding to the peculiarities of people in mass transit, Fifteen questions how open city folk are to the unfamiliar.
Having premiered at Melbourne’s Next Wave Festival earlier this year, Fifteen will run on weeknights from September 7–14 at 5:00 pm as part of Brisbane Festival.
