How you can support The Weekend Edition in light of Facebook’s Australian news restrictions
You would think we’d had enough disruption for one 12-month period, right? As you would have likely read already, as of today, Thursday February 18, Facebook has banned Australian publishers and Facebook users from sharing local and international news. This is far from what we were hoping to wake up to today.
It’s not just traditional news, either. Lifestyle publications, such as The Weekend Edition, have also been affected, as well as satirical websites like The Betoota Advocate and The Chaser. The ban stretches even further – the Facebook pages of government agencies that share important information have also been hit, such as Queensland Health and the Bureau of Meteorology. This means that unless an agreement is made between Facebook and the Australian Government, you will no longer see, or be able to share, posts from The Weekend Edition (or any other news site) on your Facebook feed.
Thankfully, you still have several avenues to access The Weekend Edition and the content we so lovingly create. Please subscribe to our weekly enewsletter to stay up to date on Brisbane’s latest food, event and lifestyle news, continue to follow us on Instagram at @_weekendedition or head directly to the website for your dose of local goodness.
We’re hopeful for speedy negotiations and a favourable outcome for Australian publishers.
