Gigs and Picnics
There’s nothing quite like lounging around in the sun with some snacks and a soundtrack of live tunes – it’s the perfect weekend vibe. Every Saturday in May, the lush City Botanic Gardens will come alive with the sounds of free live tunes galore, making it the perfect spot to pull up a chair (or blanket) and soak up the autumn sun. The program features artists across a huge range of genres – think mellow jazz sounds, modern reggae and dub vibes, swingin’ gypsy tunes and loads more. If you’re not feeling the BYO picnic vibes, don’t fret – each session will feature one sweet and one savoury food truck to cater to your snacking whims.

Rom-coms and nom noms
Looking for a cheap way to unwind after making it halfway to the weekend? Your mid-week date night or post-work hang just got a shake up. Every Wednesday night in May, Post Office Square will be turned into a free pop-up cinema screening the classic rom-coms 10 Things I Hate About You, He’s Just Not That Into You, Crazy Stupid Love and Home Again. A good movie night isn’t complete without some killer snacks, so the CBD’s newest micropub Isles Lane will be dishing up delicious grazing boxes filled with easy-to-eat treats and some cheeky beverages if you’re keen for a mid-week tipple.

Mega memory game
Do you remember those memory games from your childhood where you had to flip over random tiles on a board and match them up with their counterparts? Back in the day, being good at this game wasn’t really anything to brag about. This May, however, your luck (and memory) could be your ticket to winning up to $60,000 worth of prizes. Queen Street Mall will have a huge game of Memory set-up from May 8–12, where players will be given the chance to win from a huge range of prizes by finding a matching set of cards – just like the old days, but way better. There are dining vouchers, movie tickets, shows at QPAC and loads more up for grabs … you’ve got to be in it to win it, right? 

Mother’s Day Garden Party
She’s the one who has cooked you countless meals, consoled you through every horrible break-up, fixed your fringe when you tried to cut it yourself and always let you lick the wooden spoon after a cake-making session – yep, we’re talking about your mum. It’s hard to show your appreciation in just one day, but one sure-fire way to treat your mama is with champagne … and delicious French delicacies in a stunning fairytale courtyard. This Mother’s Day, Treasury Brisbane is hosting a Parisian-style Veuve Clicquot Garden Party complete with culinary delights, flowing bubbles and live entertainment. If you can’t afford a plane ticket, this is the next best thing.

BRISTOPIA
Although it may not pop up as an international icon, Brisbane’s skyline has a special place in our hearts. From City Hall to the Story Bridge, it’s filled with landmarks that us locals know and love. The River City has received the illustrated treatment for BRISTOPIA, an awesome new interactive exhibit landing at the Museum of Brisbane from April 27. Aussie artist Megan McKean has created a massive illustration of our city’s skyline that is brought to life with animation to reveal quirky facts about some of Brisbane’s favourite spots. Visitors can even create their own BRISTOPIA using Megan’s illustrated components – think Queenslanders, CityCats and Jacaranda trees and even brush turkeys!
