European masterpieces from Rembrandt, Monet and more are coming from The Met to QAGOMA
For those who haven’t conquered the Big Apple (back in the good ol’ days when we could cross the Pacific Ocean), The Metropolitan Museum of Art is a must-tick for one’s cultural bucket list. The Met is one of the world’s largest and finest art museums and boasts a collection of more than two million works of art spanning 5000 years. For the first time ever, some of these beloved art pieces are making the trip to visit us in Brisbane for QAGOMA’s European Masterpieces from The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York exhibition. Fra Angelico, Titian, Raphael, Rembrandt, Turner, van Gogh and Monet are just some of the names you’ll see signed at the bottom of artworks at European Masterpieces from The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, which is taking over GOMA from June 12 to October 17. This once-in-a-lifetime art showcase is direct from The Met’s collection – one of the finest anthologies of European paintings in the world, the majority of which rarely leave permanent display in New York. Spanning 500 years, this exciting exhibition will take art enthusiasts on a journey from the 1420s and emerging Renaissance all the way through to early twentieth century post-impressionism.
Highlights of the exhibition include Fra Angelico’s finely painted altarpiece The Crucifixion of ca. 1420–23, Titian’s poetic Venus and Adonis of the 1550s, Caravaggio’s dazzling The Musicians 1597, Rembrandt’s celebrated Flora of c.1654, Vermeer’s legendary Allegory of the Catholic Faith c.1670-72, and van Gogh’s idyllic The Flowering Orchard 1888. You can discover more about each iconic artwork by going on a self-guided tour on your smartphone (just remember to bring your headphones) or check out The Studio, which will host daily performances from musicians and costumed models. It’s here where gallery-goers can insert themselves into artworks through fun interactive displays and can challenge the greats by creating their own DIY masterpieces. Film fanatics can get their fix with the The Met: The Masters and the Modern Day cinema program, which features acclaimed biographical dramas, artist documentaries and some of The Met’s screen appearances in feature films throughout the years such as When Harry Met Sally, Ocean’s 8 and At Eternity’s Gate.
