When we think of the little moments in life that leave us with the warm and fuzzies, we think of elderly couples holding hands, the smell of freshly baked cookies and the infectious sound of children’s laughter. Another little thing that warms our heart? The iconic Disney opening scene where fireworks light up the sky over Cinderella’s castle – as this means we’re about to settle in for some movie magic. If you too love Disney, then you’ll be over the moon to learn that some of your favourite animated characters and films are coming to Queensland Museum this winter with the enchanting exhibition Disney: The Magic of Animation opening at Queensland Museum this June 24.

Fans of Mickey, Minnie, Elsa, Anna and everyone in between are sure to adore Queensland Museum’s newest exhibition, Disney: The Magic of Animation. Opening this June, this kid- and adult-friendly exhibition will draw back the curtain on almost 100 years of the Walt Disney Animation Studios, revealing the magic and hard work behind scenes of your favourite animated films. From pencil to paper and now computer-generated wonder, visitors will be able to take a step inside some timeless scenes from their favourite movies and discover how animators use colour to express emotions, and the technical skills of crafting character and storytelling to breathe life into the studio’s memorable stories and characters.

The exhibition features more than 500 artworks including paintings, sketches, drawings and concept art that have been specially selected by the Walt Disney Animation Research Library in Los Angeles. These rarely seen works showcase the development of beloved stories and animation techniques from films and shorts including Mickey Mouse’s first talkie, Steamboat Willie (made all the way back in 1928!), as well as films such as FantasiaSleeping BeautyThe Little Mermaid, The Lion KingFrozenMoanaFrozen 2 and the studio’s latest hit film, Encanto. Want to know how some of your favourite characters were brought to life through the decades? Disney: The Magic of Animation is flying in to Queensland Museum from June 24, 2022 to January 22, 2023. To join the waitlist for tickets, head to the Queensland Museum website.
