Creature features – catch fantastical films to complement Patricia Piccinini’s Curious Affection exhibition
Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you may have noticed that Brisbane was privy to a pretty spectacular opening recently. Patricia Piccinini’s hotly anticipated Curious Affection exhibition has finally landed at GOMA, bringing the artist’s famously weird, wonderful and totally unique sculptures for us to witness up close. If you’ve been wondering what has inspired Patricia’s hybrid creatures, this might shed a little light. Coming to GOMA’s Cinémathèque from April 6 to May 30, the Curious Affection film program presents a selection of flicks that reflect Patricia’s interests and complement the content of her fascinating exhibition.
Like GOMA’s previous offerings that marry film and visual art, the Curious Affection film program has been carefully curated to enhance the viewer’s experience of the exhibition as well as to provide some interesting context to the pieces on display. Patricia herself has selected films for the program, alongside those chosen in response to her longstanding interests in science, storytelling and empathy. One look at the offering and things instantly click – from the captivating characters to their compelling relationships with one another, each choice fits perfectly within the framework of the exhibit.
From the Oscar-winning to the more obscure, the Curious Affection film program is studded with selections that will ignite some serious feelings. The opening weekend is stacked with cult classics and big-name titles – monster classic Frankenstein, Academy Award-winning The Shape of Water, old-school gem The Creature from the Black Lagoon and Guillermo del Toro’s dark fantasy Pan’s Labyrinth all feature. The program also plays host to the Australian premiere of celebrated Czech filmmaker Jan Švankmajer’s Insects, which explores the strange commonalities between the lives of humans and bugs.
