Colourfest Brisbane

Take a bite out of multicultural film with Colourfest

Thanks to Australia’s golden soil and wealth for toil (or so ‘Advance Australia Fair’ decrees), the land has, for years, been flocked to by those from the farthest reaches of the globe. As a result, Australia is now home to a melting pot of multiculturalism – a fact celebrated in a new film festival to reach Brisbane.

Despite Australia’s multi-faceted community, the country’s film industry can be found lacking when it comes to international entries on screen. And so Colourfest has been created – as an artistic way to shed negative stereotypes and interpretations of other nations (and cultures) on screen, and increase the image of Australia as a proud multicultural nation.

Colourfest was born in 2012 in Marrickville, NSW, and has since grown dramatically in size. Now the festival happily migrates between Sydney, Melbourne, Hobart, Launceston and Brisbane and will screen in 50 venues nationwide.

For 2013, eight short films will be included in Colourfest. These films come from all over Australia (as well as a few international submissions) and each focuses on a tale of migration or diaspora. Of these entries, guests will be able to enjoy Happy Country by Corrie Chen, Mohammed by Ali Kadhim and Nonna Maria by Anthony Guilbert. The film festival will be held at the Queensland Multicultural Centre on Thursday March 21.
