Hoarders applauded in Collectomania at Queensland Museum
For collectors, their passion for acquiring dozens (or perhaps thousands) of trinkets is an addiction that can’t be ignored, and is one that is often indulged throughout a lifetime. This quirky, creative revenue for residents of every nation is explored in the Queensland Museum’s latest exhibition, Collectomania.
From Thursday March 28, Brisbane residents will be able to take a glimpse into the curious collections of many Queenslanders. Dozens of private hoardings will be on display, embracing this love of bottle caps and tea cosies and acting as a reflection of how these smorgasbords of items help individuals gain a sense of meaning and identity in their lives.
Almost 2,000 objects are on display from a group of around seven Queensland-based collectors. Amongst the many assemblages provided to Queensland Museum are those dedicated to washing machines, street art stickers, remnants of the iconic Regent Theatre and the dedicated reconstruction of a realistic hobbit hole. Alongside each display you’ll find a background piece on each collector, which shares intimate information including why they started and their most beloved item.
Collectomania is a culmination of the What do you collect? Community project of 2012.
