Gear up with festive fun during Christmas in Brisbane
There’s no denying that Brisbane is a pretty rad city – our rep as a leader in culture plus our small town (read: friendly) vibe is further boosted when Christmas rolls around. Sure, we don’t have the snow factor going on, but Christmas in Brisbane is an affair magical enough to rival our northern hemisphere brethren. From charming pantomimes to large-scale light displays and building projections, there’s always something awesome to see and do when December arrives. The best part? Christmas in Brisbane won’t break the bank – these activities are totally free for everyone to enjoy. Rally the troops and prepare for the ultimate celebration of festive fun.
Once the Christmas tree in King George Square is illuminated, you know Christmas in Brisbane is about to really kick it up a notch. From December 9 until Christmas Eve, City Hall is adorned with a breathtaking light projection show that this year is based on a story created by local Cherri Ryan. The Riverstage comes alive for the Lord Mayor’s Christmas Carols on December 10, which this year includes a star-studded line up of talent. The Christmas Parade and pantomime is always a standout, taking over the Queen Street Mall with vigour and glee. Over in Roma Street Parkland, the already gorgeous greenery will be twinkling bright with lights for the Enchanted Garden display, and the amphitheatre will play host to classic Christmas movies in the park.
Just across the river at South Bank, the festive feels continue with a whole range of wonderful activities. For those stressing about gift buying, the ultimate shopping destination is the South Bank Christmas Markets – they’re open until 10:00 pm and running through to December 23 for any disorganised elves out there. Summer has already been a scorcher, but patrons can cool off watching some festive flicks at the Christmas beach cinema. The tunes continue with the epic Christmas carols offering at the Courier Mail Piazza, which always makes for a fab family night out. It wouldn’t be a grand finale without fireworks, so the Parklands are going to light up for four nights of stunning pyrotechnics from December 20 to really bring the heat.
Whether you’ve been naughty or nice, Christmas in the City will help you rediscover what the season is all about. For more information, check out the official website to stay in the loop with all things festive.
