The Street Photographer: Chic et Boheme

Charming brocantes are ubiquitous in the South of France, their interiors filled to the brim with all manner of antiques, treasures, curiosities and knick-knacks. It’s rare, however, to have the opportunity to dine amongst the menagerie. Chic et Boheme, posited in the southern French Mediterranean town of Montpellier, integrates a casual restaurant into its concept, serving up flaky quiche, decadent cakes and a myriad of French teas. The tables, chairs and accoutrements of the cafe itself are all available for sale, meaning its decor will most likely have changed each time you visit. Check out Chic et Boheme on The Street Photographer. more

Learn to jitterbug at Back to Brisbane in the War

In 1941 Brisbane was home to fewer than 350,000 people. But as American troops flooded the city, passing through or stationed here, strains on transport, hotels and food supplies constricted freedom for residents. It wasn’t all dampened moods and wartime woes – the 1940s brought the Swing era of Big Band music and jitterbug dancing. more

Get up early and go garage sailing

Gone are the days where rummaging through other people’s seconds resulted in red cheeks. Op shops, car boot sales and garage sales were potential social disaster zones as a child, for fear of running into someone from school while your parents scoured for a bargain amongst others’ junk. But slowly op shops became cool, vintage was the new black, and the cheaper an item, the more boasting potential. Now with whole stores dedicated to overpriced secondhand goods, the weekend garage sale is a refreshing option on your hunt for homely wares. more
