The Good Room takes it to the streets with two ephemeral art activations

In the words of one Ferris Bueller, life moves pretty fast. We’re living in a time in history where we have so much access to information and the world around us, yet we are becoming increasingly disconnected. There seems to be precious little that can drag us away from our screens and into the moment – heck, how many times have you been ploughed into by someone who was text-walking? It really pays to take a moment to stop, look around and think – you might be surprised by what you see. This is the premise of a brand-new project from groundbreaking contemporary collective The Good Room, which sees Jacob’s Ladder and the Metro Arts laneway come alive with world-class art pop-ups that provide much more than just something awesome to look at. more

QAGOMA’s Future Collective Revel is the arty party of your dreams

Any Brisbane local who is trying to impress someone from interstate or overseas will almost always bring up two things – the Queensland Art Gallery and the Gallery of Modern Art. This writer is definitely guilty of humble-bragging to mates across the border about our world class, kickass cultural jewels (I am not sorry and I will never apologise). One of the key factors to QAGOMA’s success – apart from the amazing staff – is the Future Collective, a group of benevolent young guns that throw their financial support behind the galleries. Once a year they throw a party to end all parties in the name of raising dosh for art – prepare yourself for Future Collective Revel. more

Salvage turns the ugly truth of consumerism into something beautiful

Let’s face it – Mother Nature has copped a beating at the hands of her human inhabitants, particularly in modern times. A huge part of this problem is a lack of communication around the subject – sure, we know the bare bones of how to recycle but there’s a heck of a lot more that we could be doing. One of the best ways to illustrate the impact that our junk is having on the environment is by repurposing it into something beautiful (or functional), paving the way for a more sustainable future and a more open conversation. Salvage is Brisbane City Council’s annual recycling art exhibition, heading to the Judith Wright Centre from July 7 to August 19 to prove that with a little imagination you can turn one man’s trash into another man’s treasure. more

Making Modernism unites three art trailblazers under one roof

Great art is both timeless and unifying – in what other industry will you find work from three different people who have never met that manages to stand individually but still seem intrinsically linked? North American artist Georgia O’Keeffe and Australians Margaret Preston and Grace Cossington Smith lived separate lives but were united by their love of the Modernism genre, creating beautiful pieces that continue to captivate those who come across them. O'Keeffe, Preston, Cossington Smith: Making Modernism is a groundbreaking exhibition landing at the Queensland Art Gallery on Saturday March 11, uniting these three powerful painters under one welcoming roof. more
