Exhibition shares stories of The Valley People
18 Jul 2013Through the photographic medium, Alex Buckingham hopes to benefit Fortitude Valley’s community of people who live on the streets. The Valley People is a collection of Alex’s photographs, sharing the untold stories of the less fortunate, which will raise money for the soup kitchens that support this community. Having spent time capturing the stories and emotions of Brisbane’s homeless, Alex has prepared this enlightening collection of images, which will be open to the public on Wednesday July 24, from 5:30–8:30 pm at Design College Australia, Fortitude Valley. RAW showcases new artists in Elevation
18 Jul 2013This Friday July 19, Brunswick Street establishment The Arena will encase the creativity of 40 emerging artists from fields spanning fashion, music, visual art, theatre and film for one evening of RAW inspiration entitled Elevation. The evening of art-centric festivities will highlight the works of high achievers from varying genres, including artists who work with non-traditional art forms, such as hairstyling and make-up innovations. Guests can enjoy music by emerging bands, drinks at the bar and a stroll around the impressive works exhibited in the arts space. more

Seven w/ Another exhibits special anniversary edition
11 Jul 2013Taking the diverse talents of 14 local creatives and melding their individual disciplines through paired collaborations, Seven w/ Another returns this weekend with a new line-up of work. For this seventh edition, pairings include the likes of photographer Hailey Bartholomew with textile designer Erin Lightfoot and industrial designer Leo Yip with fine artist Emily Devers. This anniversary edition will also include an evening of artist talks with one team from each past exhibition delving behind the creative process of a Seven w/Another brief. The opening night event is being held on Thursday July 11 from 7:00–10:00 pm at Brisbane Powerhouse, with the exhibition continuing through to Wednesday July 17. more

With a background in graphic design and photography, Annabelle went on to pursue her artistic flair for capturing the female form, as well as animals. Born to Concrete opens at UQ Art Museum
04 Jul 2013Borrowing its name from the first Australian concrete poetry publication by the same name, Born to Concrete focuses on the emergence of this experimental form of poetry, from mid-1960s Australia. The exhibition traces the development of concrete poetry in subsequent decades. Although the style takes many forms, concrete poetry may take visual shape through prints, typewritten text, sculpture and found objects. Featuring more than 20 artists, Born to Concrete will run from July 5 until October 6 at the UQ Art Museum. more
Late Change captures fading skies at Jan Manton Art

no wonder brings clutter and confusion to Metro Arts
13 Jun 2013Erika Scott leads an interesting life. In her latest exhibition at Metro Arts, entitled no wonder, Erika uses secondhand fish tanks, torn photographs, boxer shorts, dusters and a living, breathing axolotl to convey what she calls the ‘symptoms’ of collage. Transforming everyday materials to make the notions of beauty, humanity and identity seem peculiar, Erika is interested in fluid and shifting definitions and attitudes. She uses her installations to seek a space where the subjective acknowledges ‘carefully calibrated feeling’. Her season with Metro Arts will run from June 12–29, with an artist talk session on June 19. more

Heavy Weights: International Works on Paper from the Collection opens at QUT Art Museum
30 May 2013Commencing on June 1 and running until July 28, QUT Art Museum’s Heavy Weights: International Works on Paper from the Collection reveals a little-known collection of paper works by renowned international artists. Much of the experimental printmaking featured in this collection has never been exhibited. As well as displaying significant works, this collection is also an opportunity to establish the local and international significance of the QUT art collection. The artists exhibited are said to have pushed the boundaries of traditional printmaking, with the exhibition featuring works from likes of French artist Auguste Rodin, who created the dry-point print Allegry of Spring c.1882–1888 as a means of spontaneous expression. more

23 May 2013No matter how much technology continues to advance in the realm of cameras, there will always be a certain allure associated with the disposable varieties of old. Whether it’s the rawness of the camera’s filter, or the aura of mystery that surrounds its captured moments that attracts the eye, the disposable camera continues to sell. Indisposable Concept is a project born from a love of the simple disposable camera. The concept provides an individual with one camera (filled with 24 shots) and one week in which to use it. During this time they must capture what is indisposable to them, as well as a ‘selfie’. At the end of the week, the participant sends the camera back and their personal celebration of the every day is printed.
