Brisbane Underground Film Festival

View oddball cinema at Brisbane Underground Film Festival

Pop along to your local cinema and you can choose to watch one of an array of Johnny Depp-festooned blockbusters or rom-coms to entertain you until the wee hours. But all those film gems that fall between the cracks of traditional categories head straight to the Brisbane Underground Film Festival.

The festival is a showcase of all things weird and wonderful in cinema. More specifically, Brisbane Underground Film Festival screens movies that don’t have the funding, or the approval, to make it into the usual mainstream cinemas. From November 1–3, you will have the chance to view seven underground films with the festivities held at Brisbane Powerhouse. This collection spans the recent, the kooky, the low-budget and the risky, with an unashamed incorporation of video art, experimental film and plenty of lowbrow gore.

Of the flicks on display, you can enjoy a bit of awkward laughter with The Comedy, a film that comes straight out of Brooklyn’s Williamsburg. The movie’s plot takes a look at a group of spoilt hipsters who engage in increasingly dangerous and violent activity to quell their own boredom. If the theme of family quirks are more your forte, you could choose instead the indie creation The Colour Wheel, about a mismatched pair of siblings.

You can find a full list of the movie screenings online.
