Hedonistic hubs and disco wonderlands – our top picks for Brisbane Festival

Fire up the group chat – Brisbane Festival is just around the corner! Our favourite city-wide fiesta will be delivering a bucketload of dynamite events across four weekends from September 2–24. We’re talking iconic Aussie idols, a disco wonderland, floating art exhibitions, sexy stage shows and much, much more. To get you revved up, we’ve handpicked some standout happenings that are well worth penning into your calendar.

Weekend 1: Jessica Mauboy and Sweatshop
Brisbane Festival kicks off with a bang when Australian icon Jessica Mauboy takes to the stage at South Bank Piazza on Friday September 2. As one of the country’s most beloved entertainers, Jessica’s Brisbane Festival performance will include some of her biggest and best hits since her first solo album in 2008. You can listen to our favourite songstress belt out bangers like  ‘Little Things’, ‘Never Be The Same’ and ‘Fallin’. The festivities only get amped up from there with Sweatshop (September 2–4), a scintillating showcase courtesy of the circus stars and heart-stopping hooligans that make up Brisbane’s own award-winning Briefs Factory. Warning – this hedonistic experience is adults-only, so leave the little ones at home!

Weekend 2: Girl from the North Country and Brisbane’s Art Boat
Theatre lovers can get their fix with Girl from The North Country, which will be coming to QPAC from September 8–18. This unmissable stage show is brimming with talented Aussie actors (hello, Lisa McCune!) and a soundtrack of Bob Dylan hits, and has been reimagined into a deeply moving story by playwright Conor McPherson. If that’s not enough cultural goodness for you, you can hop aboard Brisbane’s Art Boat, which is once again setting sail from Northshore Brisbane and South Bank from September 2–24. This time around, the river-cruising exhibit is celebrating internationally acclaimed Australian visual artist Lindy Lee.

Weekend 3: Manifesto and The Purple Rabbit
Those who march to the beat of their own drum can check out Manifesto, which is taking over the Playhouse at QPAC from September 14–17. This electrifying concert combines mass drumming and dance and will see nine musicians encircle nine groovers in an astonishing show that is sure to take your breath away. Talking about mind-blowing performances, late-night adults-only show The Purple Rabbit (September 15–24) is one spellbinding spectacle worth checking out. You can expect magicians, jugglers, tricksters and the world’s only Sexual Psychic-ologist – now, that has aroused our curiosity.

Weekend 4: Raise the Roof and Queen’s Wharf Disco Wonderland
The final weekend of Brisbane Festival will bring the noise with gravity-defying experience Raise the Roof, which will see some of our favourite homegrown artists like Michael Zavros, Briefs Factory International, Patience Hodgson and more take over iconic Brisbane rooftops for one night only on Friday September 23. The music magic only further ignites with a closing celebration that is sure to get you up and dancing all night long – Queen’s Wharf Disco Wonderland. Singing sensations PAULINI and Ben Mingay will be teaming up with Queensland Symphony Orchestra at Riverstage on Saturday September 24, so you can boogie to all of your favourite 70s hits.
