Ninja courses, scooter tracks and world-class cycling facilities – some of your favourite Brisbane parks and playgrounds are getting impressive upgrades
Brisbane has been put through the wringer this year, with the February floods causing widespread damage across our beautiful city. Brisbane City Council is currently undertaking Brisbane’s biggest ever clean-up operation – including fixing the likes of 45,000 potholes, removing 75,000 tonnes of flood-damaged goods and clearing 3357 streets. This rebuild and recover effort will continue over the next 12 months, with Brisbane City Council set to not just restore but improve our city’s parks, playgrounds and more. Here are some of the exciting upgrades coming to a park or playground near you …
Did you know that 862 parks, 292 playgrounds, 106 sports fields, 285 kilometres of roads, 235 kilometres of bikeways across the city were affected by the flood? That’s a whole lot of ground to cover when it comes to the clean-up efforts. Not just content with fixing facilities, Brisbane City Council is set to improve some in the wake of the natural disaster. Council is kicking off its rebuild and recover initiative by fast-tracking a program to make sure all of Brisbane’s parks will be sun safe and have some form of shade, with more than 150 playgrounds to be upgraded. On top of this, Council is set to commence works on a massive redevelopment of Murrarie Recreation Reserve, which will become an important training venue for athletes in the lead up to the 2032 Summer Olympics. This redevelopment will welcome a world-class cycling track, a 500-m speed skating track and an impressive multi-purpose clubhouse by 2024.
Even more top-notch upgrades will be coming to parks and playgrounds across the city, with a whole bunch of new ninja courses and scooter tracks being added to Brisbane suburbs. You and your little ones can expect to find yourself zooming around new scooter tracks at Paul Conti Park in Hemmant, Shaftesbury Street Park in Tarragindi, Kathleen Street Park in Richlands and Wittonga Park in The Gap. For those who love a bit of Ninja Warrior, get ready to test your strength, coordination and flexibility with ninja courses at locations like Teralba Park in Everton Park, Whites Hill Reserve in Camp Hill and Doulton Street Park in Calamvale. Similar to a jungle gym, these exercise facilities have been specifically designed for warriors 12 and over. The monkey bars never looked so fun!
