Explore and embrace Asian culture with Brisbane City Council’s LIVE program
We may be at the tail end of summer, but by no means is Brisbane cooling off. Our fair city has gotten a whole lot spicier since BrisAsia Festival has been heating up the streets with a range of shows, workshops, activities and food (of course). February is set to be a killer month – Brisbane City Council’s LIVE program has everything from cool tunes to delicious food all ripe for your discovery. We’ve picked some of the best events from the program for you to check out – be sure to bring an open mind and an empty stomach!
Folds of Belonging
– From January 27 to February 19
Inspiration can often strike in the most unlikely places, and that’s exactly what Folds of Belonging is about. This exhibition of international contemporary art is peppered throughout surprising locations in the heart of the city, aiming to interrupt your daily life and cause you to contemplate your sense of belonging.
Cargo Club
– From January 21 to February 18
Ever wanted to time travel without leaving the room? Cargo Club is the business – these club-style performances blend the past, present and future in a mash-up of live music, spoken word, ancient rituals, visual art and retro-futurist technologies.
Neon Pop – February 3
It’s about to get kawaii up in here! Music, anime and cosplay collide at Neon Pop, a super fun homage to all things Asian pop culture. Think bright colours, amazing food and live entertainment.
The Refuge of Rhythm
– February 7
Take a sonic escape at The Refuge of Rhythm, a free concert put on by performers from all around the world. It’s not just about the music – live tunes are complemented by visuals such as projected imagery, contemporary dance, calligraphy art and shadow puppetry.
Taste of Asia
– February 10
If food is what you came for, here it is – Taste of Asia is pretty much like taking your mouth on a journey to the continent. Many Asian countries are represented as traditional food stalls turn King George Square into a hawker-style market – prepare your body for steamed buns, teppanyaki, noodles, dumplings and so much more.
Kisaragi-Sai – February 11
Follow the sea of twinkling lights from the Enlighten lantern parade to Kisaragi-Sai, BrisAsia’s special event dedicated to all things Japan. The night features traditional food stalls and activities to the tune of music and dance, contemporary street performances, bonsai demonstrations and Aikido.
‘Pho’nomenal – February 17–19
It’s a festival within a festival! ‘Pho’nomenal is a brand-new event spanning three days that will explore the historical and contemporary artistic experiences of Vietnamese people. Immerse yourself in Viet culture through movies, art, fashion and authentic eats.
