Cultural preservation starts with conversation – BrisAsia Talks dives into our city’s cultural identity
Back for its eighth year from February 1 to 29, BrisAsia Festival showcases the rich culture, traditions and an atmosphere that celebrates Brisbane’s cultural diversity. A massive part of the festival is creating conversation around Brisbane’s current and future culture and creativity. Enter BrisAsia Talks, an afternoon of chatting about everything from cultural preservation to spirituality and gaming culture.
On Friday February 14, BrisAsia Talks will take over La Boite Theatre for an afternoon of community conversation that responds to Brisbane’s rapid creative and cultural transformation. From 12:00–5:00pm, enjoy panel discussions, live performances and engaging debates that promote fresh thinking around our evolving cultural identity as a city. Hear insights and perspectives from a range of spiritual leaders, cultural influencers and artists including Dya Singh (Sikh musician), Yogi Kunga, international resident artist Ata Ratu (Sumba, Indonesia), Mohiniyattam dancer Bindu Rajendren, Tibetan musician Tenzin Choegyal, gaming experts Kim Allom, Tnielle Lynch and much more. Guided by MC En Rui Foo, the event will include conversations around cultural preservation, festival curation, spirituality and well-being, e-sports, gaming, refugee stories and creative practice.
Book in to find out how Asian spiritual practices and philosophies are shaping our evolving identity then take a turn and dive into play culture – from game theory to e-sports, and how this form of interactive entertainment shapes our future in positive ways. There will also be discussion on the important work being done to protect and share cultural heritage and how we can support this sustainably into the future. You’ll also find out what role multicultural festivals play today in responding to the rapid pace of social and cultural change. From there, artists, advocates and industry professionals will discuss the reframing of the refugee debate, which includes an interactive encounter with artists, advocates and industry professionals, as well as a special performance from The Neighbourhood theatre project.
Those looking for something to do with their Valentine can also book in now for The LOVE INN, a free performance at QUT Kelvin Grove.
