Watch history be recreated with Brass on the Grass

In 1857, on a grassy knoll amongst Brisbane City’s Botanic Gardens, the first professional band concert was played to a crowd of eager Brisbane music lovers. In 2013, this special event will be commemorated with a recreation at Brass on the Grass.

Brass on the Grass is a special historic event being held in conjunction with the State Library of Queensland (SLQ) this Sunday April 28. From 3:00 pm, crowds can gather to enjoy the recreation of the same musical pieces played by Brisbane’s first professional band (dubbed Brisbane Band) at the original gig in the 19th century. The quartet will then be followed by the Brisbane City Big Band (a subgroup of the city’s oldest continuously established community band).

Brass on the Grass will act as a teaser to SLQ’s Live! Queensland band culture program, which will be held from May 11 to September 15. The event is a celebration of the state’s history of live music, from brass bands to indie acts and all genres in between.
