TWE Poetry Slam

Hear brave new voices at the Australian Poetry Slam

Words that bounce off the walls of the arena, rhythmically delivered to your ears and mind, both sharp and soft of tongue, loud and forceful, or sometimes as reserved as a whisper. Words that rhyme, sentences that stimulate and challenge, and stories that sink deep into your soul, delivering a shiver through your limbs.

The first Brisbane heat of this year’s Australian Poetry Slam will fill the air with howls and whispers of the spoken word this Friday August 1 from 7:00 pm. With just two minutes on stage, our city’s brave and eager new voices will share their original spoken word poetry, with two witty wordsmiths continuing on to the state finals on Friday September 26 at the State Library of Queensland.

At the poetry slam heats, contestants are rated by a panel of five judges, who are selected randomly from the audience by an MC. After each contestant’s turn, the judges will hold up score cards, numbered somewhere between one and ten. The event is free to attend and enter, but you’ll need to reserve a spot. And if you miss out on this first heat, you can attend the second heat on Friday September 5 as part of Brisbane Writers Festival.
